KVK nominated women SHG wins National Award


      The women Self Help Group ‘Oruma’ of Velam panchayat of Kozhikode district bags the National Award for the year 2012 for organic vegetable cultivation. The group has won second place at the national level and the award includes a cash prize of Rs. 10000/- and a memento instituted by ASPEE Agricultural Research and Development Foundation, Mumbai. The president of the SHG, Smt. Beena Babu received the award from World Food Prize winner Dr. Sanjaya Rajaram in the award ceremony held at Mumbai on 13.09.14 which was blessed with the presence of renowned Agricultural Scientist Dr. M. S. Swaminathan. The technical advisories for undertaking vegetable cultivation was provided by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Peruvannamuzhi. The Oruma group was nominated for the award by KVK and the award report was also prepared by the Kendra.

    The ‘Oruma ‘ SHG comprising of thirteen members under the leadership of Smt. Beena has grown vegetables such as cowpea, okra, cucurbits, chillies, brinjal, cool season vegetables and cassava in an area of 2.80 ha. They adopted purely organic plant protection methods and organic manures for cultivation and had come out with a bumper yield. Besides vegetable cultivation, the group members are also involved in enterprises like poultry, dairy, goatary, mushroom cultivation etc. with active involvement of all the members and support of a number of development institutions.

    “The award received at the national level has really increased our confidence and had turned out to be a dream come true for all the members of the group. We are grateful to KVK for guiding us to the National Award” adds Smt. Beena Babu with extreme delight. The group is a role model for other farmers to emulate..
