Agrometeorological Advisories (Kozhikode District)

(Period: 21.07.2018 to 25.07.2018)

General Condition

Heavy rainfalls can be expected on the coming five days. Beware of leaf roller, thrips and caseworm attacks in rice crop Postpone fertilizer applications till rainfall gets weekened Take measures to avoid water stagnations in cropped uplands.

Paddy

Tillering. Leaf roller: If leaf folder attack is seen, unfold the leaves by rolling thorny wires/twigs over the canopy. If the attack is severe spot spraying of Takumi ® @3g/10 ltr of water is also advised. Attack will be more in shaded conditions. Avoid excessive Nitrogenous fertilizers.

Case worm: Dislodge the cases by passing a rope dipped Kerocene and drain water for two days. Drain the field. Spray diluted Acephate® + wetting agent (Acetaf® 75SP @ 2g + wetting agent 1ml per litre of water).

Thrips: Spray Nimbecidine 5ml/litre.

Blue beetle: Keep the field in water drained condition. After three days, apply kerosene emulsion (at the rate of 15 ml kerosene mixed with 1 L soap solution)

Coconut

All stages. Bud rot: As a preventive measure, small perforated sachets containing 2 g of mancozeb may be tied to the top leaf axil. When rains, a small quantity of the fungicide is released from the sachets to the leaf base and thus protecting the palm. Spray 1% Bordeaux mixture on the crown of palms.

Rhinoceros beetle: Take out the beetles from the attacked palm crown using beetle hook. Swab the hole made by the beetles with Bordeaux paste to prevent entry of fungus through the cut surface.
The top most three leaf axils around the spindle may be filled with any of the following mixtures as a prophylactic measure.
1) Application of 250 gm neem cake mixed with equal volume of sand. This should be done twice ie, during April, May and September, October.
2)Crown cleaning followed by the application of 20g cartap hydrochloride 4G + 200g sand this should be done thrice during January and may and September.
Keep complete field sanitation.
Dwarf varieties are more vulnerable to the attack.

Attention banana growers-root mealy bug-a new threat to banana cultivation.
Banana plants of varieties Nendran and Rasthali grown in about three hectares of leased land at Poozhithode of Kozhikode district has been found to be severely infested with root mealy bug. Symptomatology- The plants were at six months old stage. Five thousand five hundred plants were grown in the area of which about 120 plants were showing symptoms like creamy white discolouration of the last unfurled leaf and the leaf remaining unopened for longer duration, with a burnt like appearance at the tip. The feeder roots were found to be severely damaged with dead root hairs. Live stages of mealy bugs including immatures and adults were collected from the soil, confirming the severe incidence of mealy bugs in the soil. The banana suckers which were brought from nurseries of Mukkom and Kuttiadi areas and planted without proper curing is suspected to be the possible source of infestation. Similar cases have also been reported from Kelothvayal and Chathamangalam areas of the district.
Prevention is better than cure Since suckers are suspected to be the possible source of infestation, spread of this serious pest is to be checked by prevention of use of suckers from infested areas within and outside the state. Dipping of suckers in boiled water for 10 seconds helps to destroy the live stages of mealy bug adhered to the sucker. Soil drenching of chlorpyriphos 20 EC @2.5ml per litre of water in the root zone may be taken up in consultation with the Agriculture Officers of the area.
